High and medium voltage switchgear are highly reliable and require little maintenance, as long as they operate within specified parameters. The use of SF6 as an extinguishing gas is extremely important to ensure safe operation during the equipment's lifespan. If the moisture inside the gas exceeds critical limits, problems can occur.

When SF6 and moisture are exposed to high temperatures, as occurs in operating equipment or during fault currents, decomposition byproducts can form, which may damage the switchgear. Furthermore, these byproducts pose health risks to personnel in case of exposure. External desiccants can be used to reduce elevated moisture levels, and they can be replaced easily when the desiccants inside the chambers stop functioning. Always follow proper handling and safety procedures according to guidelines.
